Bombers tragic and feral Storm supporter. Between these two champion clubs, I have seen them win 10 flags, even if I was a bit young for two of them. Pretty good haul for any sports lover! Favourite quote: "No-one ever says it's only a game when you win" - Dermott Brereton

80’s footy was slow and boring. The front rowers are both small and slow compared to today’s players – none of them would get a game today. The back line players were slower too, and didn’t have the polish of today’s players. The fighting and cheap shots were a disgrace. The entire competition was basically just local footy, not a professional, national competition. If you don’t like modern footy, watch your re-runs of fat slow white blokes dogshotting each other instead
A football-style walk-out won't work in NRL, so how can fans be heard amid crackdown nonsense?
I’m not convinced by the penalty and double send-off at the end of the Storm/Raiders game, but if Melbourne want to see who cost them the game, a few of them could find the nearest mirror. Raiders came out trying to get under Melbourne’s skin and it worked. Bellamy will rightly look at their dicipline and why they were in that position (golden point) in the first place. If Loeiro isn’t dropped next week, he can consider himself lucky for mine. He’s a great player and a great bloke from what I understand, but you can’t let your emotions control you on the field or you are a liability.

hard to get a clear average when you only have 18-20 teams. Too easy to manipulate. If people want to stay in Melbourne “for unders” because they are better, the answer isn’t market value, it’s to make your team better too

To anyone blowing up over “crackdowns”; stop having a sook and just watch the bl00dy game. Rules are in place and enforced for player long term safety. The bunker gets a hell of a lot more right than what used to be missed before it. Unknot your panties, stop thinking you run the game, be glad that infringenments are being picked up not let go, and that this gerenation of players are less likely to face the serious long term brain injuries faced by previous generations

80’s footy was garbage compared to today

If you think the ’80’s and ’90’s were the glory days of the competition you are deluded. THESE are the glory days of the competition; those “great” teams of way back then would be destroyed by any modern team in the competition today. But it’s not just the standard of play that makes today’s NRL better. The fact that modern footy has teams from Victoria and NZ, boldly taking our game to new audiences makes it better for a start. The fact that QLD finally has a decent number of teams to represent its massive League-loving population. The fact that cheap shots and punches are no longer seen as acceptable makes today’s footy better. The fact that Pacifika and Indigenous footballers are represented in decent numbers in the competition makes THESE the glory days – have a look at the teams from the ’80’s if you have forgotten just how white the NRL used to be. Anyone looking back fondly needs to take off their rose tinted glasses and recognise just how much better the game is ttoday compared to the tin pot little local suburban white boys competition it was in the ’80’s and ’90’s.
Only deluded fans and Andrew Johns think the people own rugby league
Incredible game. The Bombers kept it close by butchering a few opportunities (I’m guessing Kako owes Merrett a few beers) but in the end were just too good

He’s in the ground more than 20 years now, but stopped following league properly over 40 years ago when he moved to Victoria for work. No Kayo back then! But he grew up in Balmain. He was not a fan of the “merger” with Wests though, he was back in NSW by then
Reviving Bears brand may be a popular decision in some quarters but it’s not the right one for Perth expansion
The booing is a tough one. I agree, he seems to cop a lot and it is starting to look a bit ugly – not seeing many non-indigenous players who get booed that much that often. On the other hand, it’s easy to see after 10 replays in the cold light of day that it was completely unintentional, but when you see a brilliant young player who is finally getting his shot take out by a guy who is twice his size, I can see why fans would be giving him a bit for the rest of the game. As a Melbourne fan, I probably would have given a bit if I’d been there, but next game is a clean slate.

I wouldn’t have followed them. If I had still decided to get interested in League (and that’s a BIG if), I would have gone for my old man’s team, Balmain-Wests Tigers
Reviving Bears brand may be a popular decision in some quarters but it’s not the right one for Perth expansion
See my above comment – the NRL should have been showing some leadership and helping to make that happen over the past 25 years. The fact that they still don’t is a disgrace. Compare that to the AFL – look away from a cricket oval in NSQ or QLD for more than 5 minutes, chances are the AFL have come past and stuck 4 goal posts on it
Reviving Bears brand may be a popular decision in some quarters but it’s not the right one for Perth expansion
The reason Storm haven’t developed more local talent is the lack of support from the NRL. Why would you sink so much time and effort into buliding an entire state-wide competition from scratch (wihich they desperately need and still don’t have) when you can cherry pick players from established systems in Queensland and NSW for a fraction of the cost? You mentioned the AFL – they put serious effort into developing talent across the country – teams like GWS and the Gold Coast are given plenty of help to build local followers, and then more help with the draft to help them be successful. The NRL does squat to help teams outside of traditional markets – it’s one of their biggest impediments to growth.

Of course! Player doesn’t pick the team
Why Galvin’s reason for leaving Tigers doesn’t pass the sniff test
His reasons for leaving the Tigers are irrelevant. He’s got the right to sign with who he wants for whatever reason he wants – he’s not beholden to the Tigers fans, his teammates or anyone else. He can decide he doesn’t want to play there for more money, better opportunites, better coaching, or because Jupiter is rising in Virgo – it’s his career and his decision. Thoughtless to criticise your coach publically while you are still at the club though.
Why Galvin’s reason for leaving Tigers doesn’t pass the sniff test
Sorry Mary but I disagree with you concerning a draft. As someone who also follows AFL closely, it is clear to see that it works both to streamline player movement and as an equalisation tool for the league. Being that this is a similar-sized sport in the same country, it is fair to expect similar results if adopted by the NRL. Remove clubs from grassroots development and having the AFL take responsibility for it was one of the best things that happened to the AFL and has been a big part of how it has been able to expand to new markets. Clubs developing their own juniors is not only unfair on clubs – it limits player exposure to potential employers. That system was appropriate for a small, local suburban competition last century with limited professionalism – it’s not appropriate anymore.
NRL plunging into rugby territory with leadership vaccuum and lack of accountability from front office
Aplogies for the unclear response, I meant “defunct” in a sense of being a part of the National competition. I am aware they continue to comete at state level.
