The last time Australia won a test match against NZ in NZ was back in August 2001 at Carisbrook in Dunedin. Rod McQueen had just retired the month before after securing a series win against the B&IL, and Eddie Jones had just taken the reins for the Tri Nations.
Where did this false memory of wins in NZ by this other coach come from?
.
To refresh your memory:
Rennie had a 24-22 win over NZ in Brisbane in November 2020 after managing to get a 16-16 draw in NZ at Wellington four weeks before (that Hodge penalty that just didn’t quite go through the sticks). That’s the nearest to a win in NZ that the Wallabies have had since 2001.
.
Cheika’s wins over the AB’s were just 3: Sydney 27-19 (Au. 2015); Brisbane 23-18 (Oct. 2017); Perth 47-26 (Aug. 2019). And he managed a 12-12 draw in Sydney Aug. 2014.

Waratahs' finals hopes all but over after Daugunu magic sets up late Reds win, Suaalii knocked out in sickening blow

My WTF-is-the-ref-looking-at moment was, after pinging JTA for an admittedly illegal contact on the Tahs lineout jumper (‘though it was so soft, if it was done to the ref it would have been play on), the Tahs next lineout throw from the penalty was turned over by the Reds and while the Reds were still trying to dig the ball out of the ensuing ruck, Vahilanu simply trotted around the side of the ruck and engaged the Reds player who was over the ball. I still don’t understand why he wasn’t pinged for being offside, and I never will.
I had thought Doleman had improved substantially from where he was a couple of years back, but tonight was a bit of a trip down memory lane with plenty of baffling stuff both ways.

PS Fine stint blogging through the earlier match from Suva.

That was last year. He was out injured this year. I think he has the better all around game than Aki. Much will depend on how the coach sets the team up.

Three Kiwis, two Aussies and ONE bolter named in Lions squad as coach snubs son for Wallabies tour

Maybe. Perhaps Queensland’s player contracts don’t include any wording to have players waive their right to privacy over medical issues. While as fans we feel as though we have a right to know, we really don’t. All we really have a right to know is if a player is playing or not and if not, when might they be expected to return. Queensland are certainly letting everyone down with the lack of communication around when injured players are expected back. They don’t have to be exact. As some teams are doing, a simple ‘short-term’, ‘long-term’, or ‘out for the season’ would meet the need.

I haven’t looked in on Netflix for a while. I’ll look it up. Ta.

An American Super Rugby franchise? An Australian NFL team makes much more sense

There are one or two instances of late 70’s/early 80’s movie of Asterix in Britain on YouTube.

Highlights packages are on YouTube – usually very soon after the matches. They sometimes provide a full replay on YouTube – and by “they” I mean the official channel for the competition, i.e. Investec Champions Cup & EPCR Challenge Cup.

Given the rise in the price of cocoa over the past two years (it has about tripled), the additional cost of using something other than palm oil would seem to be a very small increment in the overall costs of their product and something that could be used as a positive in marketing.

'We're a bloody talented country': Why Schmidt's successor is unfazed by short 14-month World Cup runway

Smart move from Cron to be having Nic White on the park at the end of the match. Bayley Kuenzle impresses me with his ability to cover multiple backline positions – he’s a skillful footballer who generally makes good decisions. He could be a very handy #23 for the Wallabies. The Blues will be tougher for having Papali’i back and the Force’s scrum could be a worry by the end of the match. A win in Auckland would be a real boost for the WF. Good luck.
It’s pleasing to see the Reds lineup having plenty of continuity from last week, and putting quality on the bench in Fiji looks like a smart move. The Drua have their own issues with injuries which sees Kemu Valetini starting at #10. I’ll be tipping the Reds for an away win (NB my tipping this year has been atrocious).
The Hurricanes hosting the Chiefs should be a tasty derby, while it is hard to see the Tahs backing up their Round 6 win over the Brumbies when they go down the Hume Highway.
The Highlanders look better with Tavatavanawai back at #12 instead of on the wing, but can they put it together for win? MP will be just as desperate.

You can also win a decent chunk of ratings points by beating near competitors (even those just below you) when you play them on their turf, since home teams have 3 rating points added to their current position.
As an example, Australia (currently 81.52) would gain 0.55 from beating Fiji (80.07) by winning the ‘warm-up’ test in Newcastle, but if it was played in Suva or Lautoka, they would gain 1.16.

It is specifically January 2026 that the draw is done up.

Oh, don’t worry. It took me a couple of years to accept that it isn’t going away, and I do still find it irritating.

The Wrap: Rugby has made an uncomfortable bed with TMOs - now it's time to lie in it

I know it isn’t going to fly, but an alternative to TMO interventions and captain’s challenges is something of a blend of the two – a coach’s challenge. Teams can decide how many of their staff they want stuck watching video feeds looking for reffing mistakes, so reviews will be on challenges where someone off-field has picked up something on the video instead of captains who didn’t see what happened (or aren’t completely across the laws and protocols) getting reviews.
You also avoid having an over-eager TMO interrupting an unlimited number of times.
Limit each coach to only 2 [wrong] challenges per match so they only call for reviews of genuinely arguable incidents. Correct challenges would not count against them.
Coach’s who make a habit of getting challenges wrong will get appropriate feedback from their fans (and especially from other teams’ fans). If a coach chooses not to review something because it is marginal and isn’t worth losing a challenge, their fans might become more accepting of the notion that some things just need to be let go, while still allowing challenges when there is a genuine case on something that makes a difference.
Ultimately, adverse results from refereeing mistakes don’t hurt players as much as they hurt coaches who are much more likely to lose their job from a result being an L instead of a W, so how about we hand that referee review baton to the coaches?

The Wrap: Rugby has made an uncomfortable bed with TMOs - now it's time to lie in it

My standard comment to those who won’t see sense on that stuff in rugby league is that they need to talk to Mario Fenech about it. 😱 🤢 😡

The Wrap: Rugby has made an uncomfortable bed with TMOs - now it's time to lie in it

Bad news, Tony. “Learnings” as a plural form of ‘what is learned’ is documented from 1483 and is used very early on in Shakespeare’s Cymbeline. It just wasn’t used much in the 19th and 20th centuries, so is generally considered obsolete. Its revival in business and sports settings over the past decade has been curious and certainly irritating to many of us, but there is no doubting its existence.

The Wrap: Rugby has made an uncomfortable bed with TMOs - now it's time to lie in it

The trap ready to be sprung with the ‘dead time’ issue is a team scoring at or after the siren to change the lead having played a couple of minutes on from a missed knock-on. Instead of two minutes to try to regain possession and get over the line again, time is up with an opposition scrum feed. They have made the mistake of a knock-on but did so with two minutes to play and the chance to recover possession and have another go. It is an obvious problem waiting to happen. I get that people may be content (enough) with losing that time out of a match when it is somewhere in the middle and there are still going to be opportunities for both teams to change the result of the match, but when there will be no further opportunity to play save a scrum with channel one ball followed by an immediate match ending kick to touch, how will that feel?

Brumbies' top two hopes dealt savage blow as Hurricanes steamroll Larkham's backline to snap losing streak

SA cannot gain any points until they play NZ this year. Hosting Italy, Georgia and even Australia, their visitors will be more than 10 points behind which means no gain from the win(s), while any loss would cost 2.00 ratings points. (Barbarians and Lions don’t count towards rankings, while Australia would at best gain 0.55 from a win over Fiji in their warm-up test before the Lions tour.)

Super Rugby at last has an identity - but it's still living in a world of delusion

Congratulations on your new gig, Nick.
Thanks for your contributions here – always enjoyed reading your work.

Super Rugby Pacific Casualty Ward, Round 13: Porecki, Lee-Warner return for Tahs, Paisami suffers leg injury, DMac is back

A little nervousness is usual before a true test. This is a big match for the Reds to show they have enough quality to be near the top at the back end of the season.

Two-week tour of NZ to make or break season, and define Wallabies selection - five things

Exactly why refs blowing more penalties in the first 10 minutes produces better matches over the 80 than the “just let the players sort it out” approach. The refs should be setting a high standard early in the match.

The Wrap: Bare-knuckle dogfight ends in draw - and what happens when the Lions money is gone?

Definitely need the clear visual cue of the tap to be fair to the defending team, especially if it is taken quickly. If professional players can’t get it right, they don’t deserve their pay cheque.

The Wrap: Bare-knuckle dogfight ends in draw - and what happens when the Lions money is gone?

That variability between your best and worst levels is what separates quality players and pretenders. Canham’s best is certainly very good, but he needs to build his consistency and accuracy. He’ll play tests, but maybe not this year.
