Talking of weaving. I went to watch the Storm yesterday (well RA, you took my alternative away). Watch Papenhuzen in the first 15 minutes of that game. Now that is weaving – absolutely unbelievable.
The Wrap: Imagine how invincible the Chiefs would be if they shared players with the Warriors?
I think PVL is playing a far far bigger game than most people think. He has done a great deal for the NRL since he took over and I don’t think he is finished yet.

“AFL is the common enemy not each other ,kids growing up should be encouraged to play both codes and later in life allowed to move more freely between the two codes( in Australia)”
Amen to that. This is the big message we need to start getting through. In Victoria it is nigh on impossible to find an oblong pitch or one without too many goal posts. Kids get indoctrinated in that silly code so much so that even the most ardent 5 yr old Rugby fan starting school is fully brain washed by age 7. The work their way in and ensure that all infrastructure is suitable for their code. All local parks have a footy oval etc etc. It is insidious. That is why the Rebels had to play out of an overly expensive 30,000 seater stadium when their gates were around 7k. Breaking into the media in AFL dominated areas is an achievement in itself – just witness the disgraceful media campaign launched in Perth to stop the NRL going there. AFL is the big enemy of both codes and the sooner all rugby fans realise that then the better.

“Rugby forgot its spectators. ”
Absolutely spot on. Rugby charging $100s for an All Blacks game or you can take the whole family to watch the Warriors for $15 / head. No wonder the NRL now lays claim to Auckland.
On the NRL website at the weekend I saw a stray comment that suggests what I have long suspected is correct. That the NRL now have a global expansion plan. Where the IRL comes into this, I don’t know but given how weak they are, it won’t really matter. By 2030, global Rugby League will be renamed NRL Global. You heard it here first.

and that is the problem with private equity. Money like that has to be used for growth not simply to keep the lights on. Using it for the latter is a recipe for disaster. I have been saying for a while that NZR need to wake up to themselves. Whilst they are in a much better position than RA, they are sliding into this “All Blacks at All Costs” way of thinking. Whilst the All Blacks are a massive asset, they need to be careful or they will end up with a structure like Australia.

PVL is giving up racing to concentrate on the NRL. I doubt that he would now take on RU.

Nah, we do not want the NRL to turn into Rugby – vive la difference

” challenge of a different kind awaits NZ Rugby, who last week delivered their 2024 financials, reporting a $19m loss on record revenue of $285m.
Some of you might recall my comments a couple of weeks ago about NZR and the “death of a million cuts”. Whilst death is certainly not expected to ever occur, this is clearly one of those cuts.
2022 – Loss $47m
2023 – Loss $9m
2024 – Loss $19m
Spot the trend here ? But the really big issue is not so much the losses themselves but the fact that these are occurring at a time when most sports are experiencing something of a boom period. Now they are going to have to manage with a reduced broadcasting contract and don’t have a BIL / RWC to look forward to. That generous donation to RA is certainly looking under threat.
PVL will see these results in NZR as a further sign of weakness. His winning of the Auckland battle might be partly due to subsidised ticketing but winning he is. He now has the Dolphins, Bears and PNG expansion teams in the bag and now needs number 20 to even things up. Christchurch might suddenly start getting some attention again.
Incidentally, that record revenues being heralded by NZR is a 6% increase which when you consider inflation…….

“V’Landys writing to the Brisbane 2032 Organising Committee, eyeing up a berth for rugby league at the Olympic Games.”
Gee, you have got to admit, the guy is a trier. With everything he has on, adding teams faster than he changes his shirts, negotiating with governments, Developing the Pacific region, Expanding the game in the USA, Negotiating with global streaming companies Disney, Paramount , Dazn etc, taking over Superleague oh and running a sport in Australia – we now have this.
The more Rugby can tie themselves to the NRL’s shirt tails, the better for Rugby in this country.
The whole player share thing has probably been massively over done. I don’t know but I suspect that comment came from a chat with Forrest about player depth, developing jnrs and covering for injuries and about what they could do there to help each other. The front of office stuff is obvious but so too is training / medical facilities and some coaching. High Performance is about getting the athlete out first and then developing the specific skills second. Much of the comments here will be media hype but lets not miss the sense and opportunity in what he was saying even if he did express it badly.

No, but rain wets the ball for all players not just when it benefits the Panthers.

Spot on. Panthers should have points deducted, that will make them think twice about cheating.

The problem with fishing where the fish are to quote PVL, is that the fish get all fished out. Fans and attendances appear easy but many of them are substitutions instead of additions. Its the same TV audiences, same sponsors etc. Going into Perth might be harder on paper but every fan turning up is a new fan and you have a new area with added sponsorship appeal.
Given the number of games that the NRL have staged in Perth since 2013, I think they will have a very good handle on what to expect with the bears.

A team in Perth also has a number of benefits for the NRL that a relocated bears to the Central Coast would not
1. Another state in the NRL family
2. Fan growth
3 Jnr’s growth
4 Enhanced TV / Streaming proposition
5 WA Government support
6 Greater appeal to Australia wide sponsors
The new Perth club would have to be a spectacular failure to overcome that lot and remember, we are dealing with the NRL here and not a tin pot RA administration. It is likely that they have all the benefits factored in and the downsides mitigated.

They might try, but I don’t think NRL HQ would play ball. Too many teams in the Sydney area already. They wouldn’t want to lose Perth fans and investment in jnrs in WA. Just look at what is happening in Victoria now that the Rebels have gone.
At the end of the day, the NRL could start revoking licences with any club that starts playing silly beggars.
Perth Bears launched as V'landys blasts 'biased ... clickbait' paper's front page
NRL would have an interest in them remaining in Perth for TV contract purposes if nothing else. I suspect they may thwart any such attempt if it is not in the games overall best interests.

Marky Mark is looking better in League than Sualli ever did. We let a good one go there.
Share Bears: V’landys floats bizarre player swap proposal with Force which contravenes the NRL’s own rules
PVL will protect his own sport first, second and third, that is his job. But I belive that he bears Rugby no malice. The AFL on the otherhand ….

I think a lot of the scheduling is dominated first by the TV networks and then by stadiums bookings. After that, RA seem to be quite happy to just stick a finger in the air. RA needs to learn that they are the school wimp and they need to schedule their stuff out of the way of the big boys.
'Huge potential': Wallabies great backs ambitious idea to take Super Rugby to US ahead of home World Cup
“Queensland playing NSW, the two biggest rugby states in Australia. Only screened on Stan Sport, going up against AFL and NRL, both being broadcast on FTA and Foxtel/Kayo.”
Exactly and wait until we have the Lions going up against the Brumbies in Canberra at the same time as Origin 2 in Sydney – the only way they will get any sort of Attendance is if they broadcast Origin live around the stadium during the match – You couldn’t make this stuff up ?
'Huge potential': Wallabies great backs ambitious idea to take Super Rugby to US ahead of home World Cup
From a fan perspective, SR is a disaster here in Aus where we are reasonably open to the idea of Rugby. So now you want to put this failed concept into the USA which is about as pro Rugby as Melbourne Cricket Ground on a Saturday arvo so that their representative team(s) can get belted by an All Blacks training squad. Its good to give them some prominence but with poor foundations, this house will surely blow down in the very next rainstorm. Its a pipe dream and a costly one at that.
If you want to grow rugby in the U.S., you have to start in the U.S. and build skills and develop elite players the old fashioned way. Once they get to the stage that they can compete, then a SR type format might work.
Using SR as a quick fix this way is almost certainly doomed to failure.
'Huge potential': Wallabies great backs ambitious idea to take Super Rugby to US ahead of home World Cup
The Wallabies should be a side show to a strong domestic comp. We do not have a strong domestic comp and that is why we struggle. Super is no substitute for that domestic comp.
Bewildering selection calls that could damage Wallabies' Lions tour chances - five things
“80 per cent of revenue comes from the Wallabies. If the Wallabies bomb, Super Rugby suffers. That’s why.”
and that right there is the very reason why SR suffers, does not make money and is broke. No fan wants to watch a practice session for the Wallabies and that is what Super has been reduced too. Its Wallabies or nothing. Time to blow the whole thing up and focus on what the fans want.
This is the major area we differ from the NRL. They have a strong domestic comp that then feed everything else. We focus on the top and to hell with anything below that.
Bewildering selection calls that could damage Wallabies' Lions tour chances - five things
“the entire year playing in a different position to how they’re likely to be used by the Wallabies.”
But this is Super Rugby not the Wallabies. This is the Tahs as a club deciding how they want to use him in Super nothing to do with the Wallabies. Super is not a training ground for the Wallabies and they should not even be considered by the Tahs in deciding how they want to use him. Bench him or let him be a ball boy that is the Tahs prerogative. The Wallabies do not matter here, this is the Super Rugby Competition.

Simple, the golden boy on big dollars must be able to play anywhere. You most be nit picking if you can find fault with him 😂
Waratahs' finals hopes all but over after Daugunu magic sets up late Reds win, Suaalii knocked out in sickening blow
For once, we have a club in a position to offer the NRL something that they want. Lets co-operate them, get the front office, training / medical stuff shared, save each of money where we can, co-operate on Marketing and Sales and worry about players at some other time.
Lets focus on beating the AFL at their own game (no pun intended) rather than shooting ourselves in the foot.
