Australia's Super Rugby success: Is it just a flattering illusion or can the game seize the moment for lasting growth?
Let’s be honest - we’re still not at the level of the top New Zealand sides.

Thanks!
I don’t think we ever compete with the money in France but we can at least narrow the gap.

Obviously we should just have one. Then we’d show them all.

Agreed. Kick off the season with local derbies! Teams don’t have to travel as far at starts the comp off with a bang

Love it. I’ve been thinking about the champions league/heineken cup concept.
Even if it was just with Japan teams. Maybe the other teams could do a tour somewhere else like top US major league rugby teams?

NOT AT ALL. Is there a better team to watch at the moment than Moana?
I’d say have Moana in the NZ comp and Fiji in the Oz comp. Fiji is basically every Aussie’s second team right? And they have given so much to Australian rugby it would be a provelege to have them in an Aussie conference.
I’d also advocate for an Aussie Super round in fiji. That would be a great trip!

Yes, written before the Chiefs game, which was my point. Once they get to the top NZ teams, Aussie teams are going to drop.

Apart from India v Pakistan, name a greater rivalry than Qld v NSW
Australia's Super Rugby success: Is it just a flattering illusion or can the game seize the moment for lasting growth?
Yes, guarantees to have an Australian team in the final. Unlike the current model where a large chunk of people switch off.
If you’re a New Zealand team, you still have to beat the best NZ team to win the comp.
For Australia, whoever wins the Aussie conference semi-final is the Aussie champ – something we don’t get at the moment except for on the ladder.
“Something…. to make Australia feel good.” If you don’t feel good watching sport, it’s probably what it feels like being a Tahs supporter.

A lot of this depends on whether Schmidt wants to be the All Blacks coach one day. Surely that allure must be strong.
If he goes to NZ, he becomes an assistant/consultant to Robertson. NZ rugby aren’t reactionary enough to sack him before a world cup. If he does a good job and helps them win the next world cup I don’t think they’d sack the head coach. So good outcome for the All Blacks but as he’s pushing 60 his prospects of coaching the All Blacks slip.
If he stays with Australia, I don’t think the All Blacks will win the WC. Bold claim I know.
Then wallabies continue the upward trajectory and Schmidt gets us a decent showing at the world cup he becomes prime candidate to get the top job in NZ.
Of course, Schmidt seems like a sensible guy, and ultimately I hope he does what’s best for his family. Which I think he will.
If Schmidt walks as Wallabies coach expect the All Blacks to target their lost man
I wasn’t sure what could rinse the taste of a pool stage exit out of my mouth, turns out a weekend of best-ever-world-cup-quarter-finals was the answer. Sure most of the results didn’t got the way I wanted, but being used to disappointment, I was happy to just enjoy the spectacle.
Would love to see Japan and Fiji in the TRC. Hope the powers that be can continue their run of good administrative form and make it happen 😁
Five things: RWC quarters deliver rugby's greatest weekend, Cheika's timely Wallabies reminder, officiating wild west
Fair enough. I’m not sure anymore.

Eddie Jones should be celebrated not booed: Why the worst thing RA could do is sack the Wallabies coach
Hi Christy, I admire and appreciate the effort you put into your rugby journalism. We need more people committing time to the sport like you do.
BUT
I strongly disagree. Eddie has been an excellent coach in the past, but the last few years he has made terrible decisions, alienated staff and created problems with players.
I don’t know if anyone works harder than EJ. I do not for a second doubt his effort or his desire to win. However, he’s not up to it.
We all thought he made poor selection choices. And it’s been proven.
– Young players could have been blooded during this campaign, but there is a balance of experience and youth that leads to success.
– Players that don’t start for their Super rugby sides being selected in the starting XV
– Not enough Brumbies. They were the stand out team this year. And instead of building on it, we abandoned it.
He has been unable to pull together a strong coaching team.
– The revolving door in England was clear to see
– Lord Laurie could have been a MASSIVE help
– Coaches who don’t have rugby experience
I don’t have anything against the guy, but I also don’t have any faith in him to make the right decisions to fix things.

Dropping Quade and Hoops was a big shock. There can’t be any more surprises now the team is settled.

Wonderful to get your insights Will. Thank you.
Personally, I think Quade is very hard done by. The first game he had only recently come back from injury, he was playing behind a beaten pack, the game plan was new and territory focused, and frankly, Nic White was playing more out of 9.
Second game he had a hand in nearly ALL the points in that game. He was a link player in almost all the tries and kicked 5/5.
Last game he kicks a long range kick under pressure BUT drops a critical ball. If they had scored off that play, they would have won and he’s a hero. But his career is over because he drops one poor pass?
I really rate Carter, but my preference would be for him to finish the game. If we’re behind he has the adventure to play catch up, and if we’re ahead is defence is exceptional.
Nic and Quade never seemed to gel as a combination. I rate NW but I don’t think they found their groove. Not like you guys back in the day.
And Quade as a mentor is invaluable. I have no doubt all those guys in the squad are dedicated but there was space for QC.
Anyway, my best wishes to super Cooper. As you can probably tell, I’m a long time fan. His contribution to Australian rugby and the Reds meant a lot to me, and I wish him all the best with his next adventure.
WILL GENIA: Why Eddie had to choose between Nic and Quade, moment I felt Hoops was done, hardest done by duo
Really good points. Brumbies made this plan work (mostly). They kicked a lot and their defense was rock solid. But the extra distance on the kicks plus the fatigue from altitude.
'What was with that defensive set up?': Jones-Hodgson combo must get up to speed fast with Fisher absence clear to see
Thanks for the comments everyone. Love the discussion.
Obviously wrote this before the weekend. Sadly, it looks like I was right. Force were great against the Highlanders (but they are the weakest NZ team), Reds weren’t quite good enough to stay at the top of the table, and the Waratahs…
