Long term 'glass half full' rugby fan - Wallabies, Wallaroos, Tahs, Marlins + Aussie 7s

Not really comparable. For information women’s rugby isn’t covered by the media like the NRLW is. So most people would not be aware it was on. Also for information playing on a Saturday at 3pm clashes with grade rugby. The local Hunter Wildfires men & women’s teams were playing at that time in Sydney. Add to that it was raining. But it’s great you are interested.

Wallaroos' drought against Black Ferns continues despite second-half comeback

I would have had Urwin in the the first squad of 40. And yes Henwood looked good but has withdrawn so I wouldn’t be chasing her.

Wallaroos' drought against Black Ferns continues despite second-half comeback

In light of the 7s season being so short now I expect some of them will try & combine NRLW, if RA contracts will allow it. Also the main areas the Wallaroos need depth is in the forwards and it’s a bit hard for NRLW forwards to transition with the set piece technicalities. But who knows with the 2029 World Cup there maybe some interest..

Wallaroos' drought against Black Ferns continues despite second-half comeback

Possibly bit hard to transition. But a few of them have spent time with Reds, Tahs & 7s programs before joining the NRLW.

Part of the issue was they had almost run out of backs with the 3 injuries. I would have moved Caslick to FB for some of the game, just not sure who to put on the wing, Cramer? But her defence not flash.

Wallaroos' drought against Black Ferns continues despite second-half comeback

Despite the score it was an improved performance compared to last year. The usual issue of physicality was a problem in the first half. For a first start at flyhalf Hinds did pretty well. Although she is not going to take Moleka’s spot. You could see Caslick was chomping at the bit to get more involved but stuck to her wing as required. Marsters made a physical difference when she came on, think I would start with her.
It will be very interesting to see what team is selected for next weekend. Hope Halse is back.

TBH I don’t follow the logic. If you want to start Hinds to see more, maybe at fullback

Wallaroos name sevens guns, K-train to start as Yapp make mass changes for Black Ferns

I will be honest, am more than a tad worried about the selection of this team. Appreciate there aren’t many backline options with Stewart, Terita, Halse out but Moleka and Cramer could be at 10. This seems like a bit of an experiment rather than selection to win the game. But in reality the Kiwis put 60 on us twice last season so why not try something out of left field. Caslick at wing will be busy.

It must be a good side to not select Portia. Am very worried about the Wallaroos get the feeling it is an experimental side having Hinds at 10. While with 3 backline injuries Stewart, Terita, Halse there aren’t many options. If really trying to win have Moleka or Cramer at 10. Also I’m a huge Chancellor supporter but if you have Hinds at 10 then have Marsters at 7 to help her in defence. I’m worried.

Wallaroos launch their campaign in style as debutantes stand tall - but injuries will hurt ahead of Pacific Four Series

Not denying Hamish’s management approach was very flawed but at the same time in Covid, RA needed someone to stamp a bit of authority & make some serious decisions. Some not pleasant decisions. And yes I agree he and Eddie a lot of funds were spent unnecessarily. As for Suaalii initially I thought it was paying way too much & would cause issues with re-signing players etc. & it has . But on reflection, from a marketing spend it has been worthwhile. Rugby has received more coverage with him than it ever would.

The Wrap: As ever, parochialism in Australian rugby rears its head in battle over Kiss appointment

Agree Waugh & Herbert have done a lot and have a very different approach and one that is more appropriate. Hamish came in at a tough time, if I recall it was in the middle of Covid, RA was in deep trouble it needed some one to just make some tough decisions, especially in cutting costs etc. I wasn’t a fan of his decision to cut Rennie & install Eddie, that was a disaster. The Suaalii decision seems to be paying off. Hamish and his ego then got too big.

Great idea but can’t see the how financials would work. Rugby is pretty broke everywhere. But absolutely look at all the options.

Exclusive: Super Rugby considering USA expansion as World Rugby gets edgy over looming World Cup

A concern is under the new format, top 8 only competing I don’t think Irish women made it. They have always been highly competitive but this year around 6 of their players have focussed on 15s for the World Cup. As a result they have dropped right down to the new Div 2 I think.

'Our army is maturing': Young Aussies smoked by familiar foes, Kiwi great lets F-bomb slip

Would have to say both Aussie teams finished where you would expect them to finish. The women have been the 2nd best team all season, the Kiwis just too good, too often. Credit to coach Walsh he has had to bring in a lot of new players due to so many key injuries. The ingredient the women’s team is missing is some physical players. They can still get pushed around at various time by the Kiwis, French and Americans. The LA final was the first time I can recall they had a lot of ball but couldn’t break the Kiwis defence. No doubt missing Caslick and Hinds. Overall a good year.
For the Aussie men, 6th place seems to fit at the moment. Lost a couple of experienced heads, a new coaching team, brought in some youngsters. On their day they could beat any team they just could not do so consistently. They have a great work effort & the defences has improved. The ingredient they are missing is some out and out pace. So often they had extended periods of possession but couldn’t break through for a try. There was a stat showing how many passes/ phases before getting an try and it was significantly higher than the other teams. They have to work so hard. Finishing 6th seems spot on. They aren’t down at the bottom and they aren’t at the top. They are mid table. Plus they have brought in a couple of quality youngsters. So it’s been an ok year.

Very much agree “state parochialism impeding the greater good” it is why rugby in Australia will always struggle. While I was no fan of Hamish & the way he did things, he was trying to change the structure for the betterment of rugby. Even if it had him for a period as an autocrat.
Heard a good descriptor, since Covid in particular, Australia has become more a ‘state nation’ as opposed to a ‘nation state’. Has always applied to rugby.

Terita was having such a terrific game until she got injured. She picked up where she left off at the last World Cup. Amosa also showed why she was basically sharing the hooker role at the Brumbies with Naden, great to see consistent lineout throws too.
But for me the key player was Halse, can’t imagine there are many, if any, other 18 years in any footy code with the skills she has. Plus she is fearless, throws herself on the ball, makes her tackles.

Wallaroos smash Fiji to start World Cup year in style - but injuries put 'dampener' on super win

No don’t remember her but BSM looks pretty good, not much to her physically.

First Wallaroos squad of 2025 doesn't spring many surprises - but leaves plenty of tough questions

Keen to see how the team goes. There are only a couple of surprise selections. Apart from Terita at 13 it’s the backline that finished WXV2. The forward a couple of changes which is understandable especially around the front row. Have to get more minutes into Browne, a toss up to start Amosa or Naden at hooker, Pohiva was going to play the question was start or bench. The main question is around Hinds on the bench as 9/10 , is a big call. If looking for a 9/10 Ella Ryan has experience at both. In saying that have been a long time fan of Hinds so keen to see how she goes.

Wallaroos name six debutants and new skipper for Test opener as Yapp shuts down fears of team angst

Am just a big Jorja Miller fan, keen to see her play 15s. And yep the BFs have so much depth in the backs. My preference is not to pick woodman-Wickliffe at all, at least not against the Wallaroos but if she has to play, she looked good at 13.

First Wallaroos squad of 2025 doesn't spring many surprises - but leaves plenty of tough questions

You are probably right. I think part of the issue was Eddie was talking up the potential success, then decided to sacrifice the 2023 World Cup to plan for 2027. Amongst all that was saying he wants to really help Australia but when it didn’t go to plan he had an escape route planned to Japan. Plus fans didn’t like the way he treated some of the players. And now to come out and say he shouldn’t have taken the job for 2023 doesnt endear him to anyone.

Can only go on their actions and what they say.

I saw that plus Jorja Miller made the squad. Has she been in the camp or LA sevens.

First Wallaroos squad of 2025 doesn't spring many surprises - but leaves plenty of tough questions

Think Eddie has coaching skills, he has been coaching for a long time. But do think he hasn’t changed with the times. Plus I do agree he doesn’t leave a team in a better position.

'It's a welfare sport': Eddie Jones on rugby's 'arrogance', 'cheap' Suaalii, 'sad' Brumbies and what must change

Sure money is more than very handy but Joe has done a pretty good job without the money Eddie believed he needed. Also did it without blowing everything up. As for the Reds I understand their perspective & they are pretty parochial. Bu all is fine now.

'It's a welfare sport': Eddie Jones on rugby's 'arrogance', 'cheap' Suaalii, 'sad' Brumbies and what must change

He sounds a bit selfish taking the Wallabies job when he knew he shouldnt but he was desperate to have another go at a World Cup.
