Penrith are likely to cop a heavy fine from the NRL after trainer Shane Elford has been sprung squirting the ball with water before kick-offs during their 30-30 extra-time draw with North Queensland on Saturday night.

The former Panthers utility back deliberately sprayed the Steeden with his water bottle before handing it off to Dylan Edwards before kickoffs at the halfway line.

A Cowboys fan noticed the underhanded tactic and posted it on social media.

North Queensland coach Todd Payten told NewsCorp that Elford employed the tactic before every restart and that his staff had noticed his gamesmanship from the coach’s box.

“I will let the NRL handle it. I don’t know what they’re going to do but it was noticeable to us, definitely.

“I don’t want to say anymore.”

By making the ball dripping wet, it increases the chances of the Cowboys dropping the slippery pill when its kicked off.

Elford has previously been in trouble after he was engaged in a slanging match while performing his trainer duties with Panthers opponent Reed Mahoney during a 2022 finals match.

Penrith were fined $25,000 and trainer Pete Green was banned from the finals series after he illegally called on the referee to stop play to treat Mitch Kenny during a crucial stage of a playoff clash with Parramatta.

The NRL is yet to announce a punishment for the Panthers’ latest indiscretion but the club is likely to be heavily fined and Elford could be banned.
