Here's the breakdown of group A of the 2026 World Cup qualification campaign.
These tournaments offered glimpses of how to understand the opponents - and Australia must learn quick lessons.
Auckland is such a sensational club. Only in the debut season and they have caught everyone in storm.
One hand I think it is time for New Zealand and OFC to join and become part of AFC. The success of FIBA in merging Oceania to Asia should serve as a playbook here.
The A-League Men finals are off to a flyer - but can anyone stop Auckland?
Pep can go to coach another City Group team like NYC, Yokohama F. Marinos, Shenzhen Xinpengcheng, or Melbourne City now.
Haaland returns but City stumble again as Champions League slips further away
Not your day Staj. But just wish WSW could’ve gone further. I don’t get why Popovic put Arzani though his goal perhaps could convince Popa to bring Arzani again.
Let’s hope next year will have 14 teams and the Canberra representatives be able to line up quickly.

A strange deja vu. Arnie left because of September catastrophe, and now he has to face the ghost of it, but in Iraq instead.

Popovic. A choice perhaps should’ve not happened, I feel.
FA CEO Johnson stands down, former Matilda named as interim replacement
The appointment of Tony Popovic cost him the job. If he had made a smarter decision then it would’ve been different. A silent achiever and astute visionary but tainted by a wrong choice for Socceroos job.

I think Sydney FC and Melbourne clubs (Victory and City) do their best in term of promoting talents here.

Clearly the closest and most entertaining match of this UCL season. Absolute phenomenon. Simone Inzaghi deserves praises for his work.
But Lamine Yamal is one of a kind star, only 50 years we can see. Damn.

Iraq’s playing style can also be another issue. Iraq do not play the same type of football as Australia, and their mindset is massively different. Iraqis are noted for being skilled players, but not good at discipline. If Arnie can install discipline, they’ll be a force to reckon with.
Iraq claim ex-Socceroos boss Arnie as head coach with World Cup hopes on the line
Well, they suffered March horrors by losing to Palestine 2-1 and drawing 2-2 to Kuwait. Both teams are widely considered the weakest of the table, so technically Iraq should’ve won, but they didn’t. This dumped them to third place, behind South Korea and Jordan.
This is likely to be facing a ghost of itself. Given Arnie’s September horrors remain fresh on mind, to see Iraq suffer similar stumbles could prove decisive.

No. Seriously, is NBA obsessed with making itself next Premier League or better than FIFA World Cup? NBA today is a mess, viewership is moving south and somehow they want to become global?

Too early to tell.
Japanese coaches are making marks across East and Southeast Asia in recent years, and the UAE was even rumoured to have appointed a Japanese to coach their struggling NT before Cosmin Olaroiu was named coach. Likewise, South Korean managers are storming in Southeast Asian and Chinese markets, and did make blueprints in Africa (South Sudan once). Meanwhile, with just Peter Cklamovski as Malaysia coach, the task is huge and mounting.
Besides, Iraqi FA has not confirmed Arnie as their new manager.
Iraq claim ex-Socceroos boss Arnie as head coach with World Cup hopes on the line
Haven’t seen any confirmation from Iraqi FA, but Casas’ stumbles to Kuwait and Palestine drew something oddly similar to Arnie’s earlier stumbles.
But if he is going to coach Iraq, the problem will be immense. Iraq’s playing style is drastically different from the Socceroos, being deeply emotional-driven and skilful, unlike Socceroos’ athleticism but rough style. If he can’t smartly adjust to this, he will not even stay in the job.

Problem is not that simple, it needs total evaluation and Australia have not done well.
Think of Harry’s brother John Souttar. He could’ve actually played for Australia too. But when the Aussies failed to appreciate his potential the same way they saw from his younger brother, John quickly opted for Scotland. The same with Strahinja Erakovic, his mom has Australian passport, but Erakovic was not mentioned until he decided to represent Serbia and the rest is history.
Now they currently have some undiscovered gems like Deni Juric (chance to play for Croatia is now impossible), Jed Drew, Anthony Kalik and Jacob Italiano. But will they ever be recognised and recommended under Popovic and FA board?
Hands off! A proven strategy to keep the Socceroos' overseas stars in green and gold
Simone Inzaghi has proven to be a bane on Barcelona recently. No other coach can hamper Barca so long like Simone and he surely knows this. Problem is handling Lamine Yamal require more than that, just 17 years old and he has already been a sensation after Euro 2024, it needs a miracle to curtail Yamal’s magic.
Arsenal is a lost cause as long as Arteta stay coach. Luis Enrique, a proven winner, knows exactly well how to deal with fellow compatriot.

Football Austrslia knows the biggest issues lie in geography and the drop of players’ qualities, yet their struggle to find how to address is amazing. I lost it entirely, given I am no Aussie.

Given how much criticism directed against Melbourne City due to link to the current Man City owner, I am becoming fascinated of how the American ownership could do something better. American businesses have been accused of trying to turn football into American-style management (mainly franchise MLS), and are not warmly received.

Oh, American ownership. You have Melbourne City owned by Emirati sheikhs and now this. Given the next possible Canberra team can also be owned by Americans, thing is turning more hilarious.
