Most likely a throwaway line.

But geez, there were so many questions with AFL references from the journos. Like “have the NRL consulted with the AFL on how to run a successful sporting team in Perth”. PVL’s response, “we have not consulted with the AFL. I don’t see KFC checking with Maccas when they open a new store”.

I think a 6 year old could ask a better question.

Share Bears: V’landys floats bizarre player swap proposal with Force which contravenes the NRL’s own rules

One good idea the ARLC has come up with is for each NRL club to be allowed to sign two PNG pathway players outside of the salary cap. As long as those players participated in junior rugby league in PNG. So potentially 34 players.

NRL barking (mad) up wrong tree with fanciful plan to boost player depth with Springboks and Pumas

Dolphins are in their third year, so you would aasume that in the next few years, we will see juniors coming through and therefore expand the player pool.

The problem with expansion is that PNG has come out of nowhere to be granted an NRL license on political grounds. The NRL didn’t want to wait too long for a Perth team.

Stackpole”s career was before my time. I do remember him in the nineties where he appeared on channel Seven’s “Sportsworld” program with Bruce McAvaney. Stackpole was the regular cricket expert on the show, and I found his comments quite fair.

Also appeared on ABC Grandstand radio, especially around Victorian matches and Boxing Day Test. He was a good ambassador for cricket, on and off the field.

RIP Stacky

'Giant of the game': Hard-hitting opener Keith Stackpole passes away at 84

In the last 15 years, they are still producing fast bowlers like Roach, S.Joesph, Russell and Archer. But of course, Russell is more of a T20 player and Archer went to England.

Indeed. He had a late flurry towards the end of the season.

Sangha, Carey tons seal SA's record-breaking Shield final run chase, end 29-year drought in wild scenes

Congrats to SA. What a wonderful final. Qld fought back extremely well after the disastrous first innings. They were also in front for the first time when SA lost three wickets early in the run chase. But the partnership of Sangha and Carey brought it home.
Carey is in rare form with the bat. Like everytime he goes out to make, he makes a significant contribution. With Sangha, i am happy for him. At NSW, he probably made his shield debut prematurely before he was ready. But has now produced an unbeaten century under pressure in the final. How valuable will that innings be for Sangha in years to come? Yet, some people say, scrap the final.
Also good performances from Clayton and Vidler, two young players of the future for Qld. Wildermouth deserves a mention. While Lehmann has been fanstastic towards the end of the season. He is having an impact, just like his old man. And Doggert set it up in the first innings and ended up taking 11 for the match.
All in all, a great way to finish the cricket season, and a few players to keep an eye on next summer.

Sangha, Carey tons seal SA's record-breaking Shield final run chase, end 29-year drought in wild scenes

Hi Noah

Thank you for the shout out. I can’t believe i wrote that piece 12 years ago. Time flies. In those days i had more faith in ABC TV compared to today.

Meanwhile CA don’t give credit or much attention to the Sheffield Shield, which is a real shame. The BBL takes more of a centre stage, where the duration of it is probably two or three weeks too long.

With the SS, people can watch it via streaming all day every day. Plus there’s day/ night shield games. I don’t know if CA have explored the commercial opportunities of SS cricket.

And on the field, with such a prolonged BBL, we don’t see touring sides take on our state teams anymore like Qld v England, NSW v Pakistan or WA v South Africa.

It is all about money and the BBL.

Asleep at the wheel: Adelaide Oval fixture clash between codes a wake-up call for Cricket Australia

Disappointing outcome. Playing a final at a test venue might have given the players from both sides valuable experience.
A couple of points. Firstly the SA government funded the Adelaide Oval redevelopment. I guess one of the key reasons SA put tax payer funding towards AO is because it would become a venue to be used all year round, with multiple sports been catered for.
Secondly, the AFL game Adelaide v NM could’ve been switched. Maybe at NM’s home ground. Both teams play each other twice. The other game is in late August. Today is March 14, 16 days away from the game. AFL finals games have shorter notices.

AFL blocks push for Adelaide Oval to host Shield final despite 'extremely compelling case', Premier's plea

As I said,” WA could’ve declared 30 or 40 runs earlier”, which equates to a target of 242 or 252.

Not 220 as you stated.

SA Premier's solution for Shield final over AFL clash, Konstas digs in to save Blues, Bulls thump Tassie to stay alive

Great win by the underdogs, India. This is up there with Leicester winning the EPL. 😱

India milk 'home-ground' advantage all the way to Champions Trophy glory after edging Kiwis in nail-biter

If Carey comes back for SA, then I hope Liam Scott keeps his spot. He got 4 wickets and made over 100 hundred runs in the game. In recent times, it does seem as though Scott is becoming more comfortable playing state cricket. He is 24, and sometimes it does take a while for young players to make an impact.

Possibly a player to keep an eye on.

SA Premier's solution for Shield final over AFL clash, Konstas digs in to save Blues, Bulls thump Tassie to stay alive

WA’s batting cost them a chance of a win. They got bowled out for under 200 in the first dig. In the second, WA made 4dec / 346 off 120 overs, at a run rate of less than 3 an over.
If WA scored those runs hypothetically off 95 overs at 3.6 an over, then there would’ve been enough time for both teams to go for the win. Or WA could’ve declared 30 or 40 runs earlier.
As for NSW, they are in third spot, ahead of WA. NSW have to win their last game and hope SA is not beaten against Qld. Why should NSW “go for it”, whereas WA lacked intent with the bat?

Good win by India. They know the conditions well in Dubai.

Aussies draw blockbuster Trophy semi with India after Black Caps caught in spinner’s web

Wow!

Like you have to drag something from what happened seven years ago. Grow up.

Aussies in the dark over travel nightmare - semi venues 2000km apart due to allowances for India

I am not really engaged with this tournament, even though Australia has made it to semis with a questionable squad.

India playing all of their matches in Dubai has turned the event into a farce. Many think on this site that there is a “big 3”. I can only see a “big 1”. It is India’s tournament to lose.

Yep, not having any international cricket in Pakistan for a long time, has really stifled the sport there. Sure, they are still producing good players like Azam and Rizwan, but they did have better teans in the past.

Kohli breaks another record with unbeaten ton to send Pakistan packing from Champions Trophy

Firstly its great to see an ICC tournament in Pakistan. I hope this improves interest in Pakistan cricket. I want Pakistan to do well as hosts.

As for us, we had a shocking preparation leading into it, but may have stumbled across the right batting order, at least for the CT.

Happy for Short and Labuschagne to get some runs. Carey is in great form. As for Inglis, he is having a good time with a century overnight and a century on test debut only a few weeks back.

Something about imported WA keepers….

New-look team but same old Aussies, always winning: Inglis slays English with epic ton in HUGE run-chase

I hope he gets back to the way he batted throughout the grades with Sutherland and when he got those twin centuries for NSW earlier in the season.

Will the real Sam Konstas please stand up? Ex-Test star questions rookie's methods - 'like his heart rate goes up'

He may have been in the right head space if the selectors didn’t drop him after just two tests. An opportunity was missed for him to learn and bat with Khawaja, who has a great record in Asia.

Instead the selectors went for Head and only averaged around 33 for the series.

Will the real Sam Konstas please stand up? Ex-Test star questions rookie's methods - 'like his heart rate goes up'

Konstas still has a fair way to go to establish himself as a one day opener. He just got his maiden domestic 50 over century. Let him develop in the white ball stuff away from the spotlight. At the moment, Renshaw should be the opener, along with Head. Webster, Sutherland and Bartlett should’ve been in the squad.

Short, JFM and Abbott should all be back home. JFM’s career is very underwhelming with tailender averages across the board.

Utter humiliation: Aussies cop second straight caning from a team that didn't even qualify for Champions Trophy

You do raise a good point about the First Test loss in the BGT. Australia did well and truly come back to win the series, and i guess you don’t want to prematurely predict failure. However, when you add the Pakistan games back in November, that’s three losses in a row. A side who is struggling to reach 200.

Anyway, lets see what happens in the next game. Australia needs to pick up some form pretty quickly.

Edwards also got a 50. He is progressing nicely.

Sheffield Shield Wrap - Round 7: A four-session match, Tassie's heart-stopper and are the Bulls finishing in true State of Origin style?

I would’ve had Renshaw, Webster and Sutherland in the squad. Renshaw is killing it in domestic 50 overs. He is leading run scorer and averaging 70 this season, 41 overall.

Webster is second with most wickets. Big Beau could’ve been handy as a second spinner in Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Sutherland did alright with the ball last season, only had three games this season. Sutherland could also potentially be a dangerous number 8.

The current squad would be lucky to get out of the group. Not sure what the selectors see in JFM.

I don’t want to dismiss Renshaw’s century. Any first class century is a good achievement. However he was up against a fairly inexperienced NSW bowling attack.
