It is a issue for booking the grounds, because you end up booking them for a fifth day just to be sure, and you might as well use the 5th day anyway if the ground is booked.

My understanding from my research and articles read, is that the ECB are keen, with other boards being cautious. Maybe it is a scale and the ECB is cautious, whilst the other boards are more sceptical than them.

In the 8 Test matches held this year, attendance has been around 25,000 – 30,000 per test, which is consistent across each day and for stadium size.

Obviously if one is to compare it to BBL and IPL, which is pyrotechnics and a full house every night, it would seem empty and lacking.
I had a thought about the way CA keeps rotating ‘lesser’ matches amongst cities (ie Sri Lanka in Canberra), whilst ignoring the traditionally strong cricket centres like Hobart. I have not done any research on crowds for this comment, but it is an idea that came up, that maybe the shuffling of matches away from traditional grounds has resulted in less turnout at the new venues?

Interesting indeed, thanks for your research. I know my main thinking in that window was the ECB’s previous refusal to let contracted players join the IPL (KP etc.), which obviously coincided with First Class cricket and potential tours elsewhere.
I am intrigued about the generally vacant time slot, as I would have thought the subcontinent teams may have used that slot to play home series (a la IPL), but interesting research indeed. Thanks!

How will it save them? If a team cannot get through 90 overs in a day now, an extra half hour will make no difference. Further, Weather will ruin a match if a day is washed out. Your quote, “the fifth day is a must have for an increasingly small subset of the cricket-interested universe” suggests that there are very few people who care about Test cricket. The only issue being that 95% of players, past and present and probably future, who dedicate properly to FC cricket want a 5th day.

But consider a batsmen who wont get out, but isn’t scoring quickly either. Geoff Boycott would have caused a nightmare in this scenario. One cannot assume runs will come quickly or easily.

A) In my submitted draft, I did suggest that Root was pulling the ECB line due to the Hundred etc.

B) I also would be interested to learn about the overall FC input from players, and what time that is (ie, County Cricket being played on the fringes of summer, not during prime time when T20 is king)
C) I think the premise for using the grounds is a great idea, and something that should be looked into by the cricketing boards. Maybe even have some form of all-star game, T20 or otherwise to fill in the time and draw crowds. How that would work for 3,4 or 5 matches in a row, I do not know, but the premise is an excellent idea.

Of course, the grounds have gotten bigger, but that is an interesting stat. So maybe the crowds have stayed the same, but the stadiums have gotten bigger, giving the perception of less attendance? Or maybe it is in comparison to T20 cricket.

But, as Tim Paine said, many matches this year and last (England vs. India) went into the fifth day before a result. You can talk about overs, but we cannot get through 90 in 6.5 hours, how are we going to get through 100 in 7?

It was more the premise of it being more convenient to schedule it at a time more commercially viable for both, whereas the Ashes it is impossible to even think about it.

Agree with all, however, I also think there is issues with the schedule of day night tests, especially if we are playing say, the West Indies or NZ in Perth. We already have to stay up till midnight on the east coast, I dare not think how late they would have to stay up.

I am so glad you made the obvious statement that they will be shoving more money in their pockets. It’s a wonder they mentioned rest and commercial interests in the same sentence. The ICC is full of business moguls, as are the cricket boards, and there is little protection for the side of the game bringing in the least amount of money from their greedy hands.

The issue being that it is uncommon to see 90 overs bowled in a day, and if we removed the extra half hour which is always taken, even fewer would end with 90. Sure they can crack down on extra brakes and the 12th man running out drinks every 2 balls, but it would be very hard to get 90 overs in, let alone 100 with the tactics of play.
