The 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to start on Sunday (1am AEDT) with 15 Aussies involved as players. This is how every team stacks up.

For the first time, the tournament will go head-to-head against the Pakistan Super League (PSL), and following India’s World T20 triumph last year in the Caribbean and the United States of America, there is a renewed interest in the format by the Indian cricket fans.

The IPL Mega Auction changed the look of all the 10 sides, and with Rishabh Pant going for a whopping $4.91 million to Lucknow Supergiants, closely followed by Shreyas Iyer’s fee of $4.86 Million to Punjab Kings, IPL franchises broke the bank to get their desired targets.

There will be 15 players from Australia, including Test captain Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitch Starc, Travis Head and Glenn Maxwell. It will mark the IPL debuts of Western Australian Josh Inglis and Aaron Hardie, and Xavier Bartlett of Queensland.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK)
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have built a squad suited for their home ground of Chepauk. Traditionally, Chennai has been the friendliest pitch for spinners in India, and with Ravindra Jadeja, returning Ravichandran Ashwin and newly signed Afghan spinner Noor Ahmad, CSK has a deadly spin trio.

Add into the mix Matheesha Pathirana, Sam Curran and newly signed Khaleel Ahmed and one of India’s best young talents Anshul Kamboj, and the Chennai outfit have an all-rounded bowling attack, of new bowl bowlers and death-over specialists.

Ruturaj Gaikwad is their captain for the season and seasoned campaigner MS Dhoni returns to don the CSK yellows.

An Achilles heel could be the lack of experience in the middle order and CSK will want players like Shivam Dube, Rahul Tripathi, and Deepak Hooda to play the role similar to Ajinkya Rahane, Ambati Rayudu and Suresh Raina, like the earlier editions.

Predicted Playing XI: Ruturaj Gaikwad (C), Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, Rahul Tripathi, Shivam Dube, MS Dhoni (WK), Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Noor Ahmad, Khaleel Ahmed, Matheesha Pathirana
Likely Impact Sub: Deepak Hooda, Sam Curran, Vijay Shankar

Delhi Capitals
Delhi Capitals (DC) had a good auction, but their plans have hit a Harry Brook shaped snag, as the Englishman has made himself unavailable for this IPL season. They are yet to officially name his replacement, but they seem to have set their heart on Sri Lankan Dasun Shanaka.

This significantly alters their plans for the tournament, with reports suggesting that Faf du Plessis will get into the Playing XI and KL Rahul may not bat in the top order.

A lot of their fortunes will depend on the blistering starts Jake Fraser-McGurk may give alongside youngster Abhishek Porel, and what uncapped Indian player Ashutosh Sharma, who was bought for around $690,000 will offer, but they will want Tristan Stubbs to find his form.

Mitchell Starc and Champions Trophy hero Kuldeep Yadav will have to shoulder most of the bowling responsibilities. It will be interesting to see how T Natarajan, who was purchased for around $1.95 million will perform.

DC will like him to bowl the tricky overs right at death. The lack of quality on the bench may prove to be costly throughout the course of the season.

Gujarat Titans
The 2022 winners and 2023 runners-up Gujarat Titans (GT) went into the auction, having retained Rashid Khan, Shubman Gill, and young Indian batter Sai Sudharshan.

At the Mega Auction, they secured two stars in Jos Buttler to open the innings and Kagiso Rabada to lead the bowling attack alongside Rashid. Pacer Mohammad Siraj will hope for a strong showing to get back into contention with the Indian national team, and R Sai Kishore will want to capitalise on his opportunities to get into the Indian team fold.

While the GT seems set at the top of the order, somehow, their squad is full of players that could bat from number 6 to 8, or finishers.

Another good campaign would catapult Rahul Tewatia into Indian team’s T20 plans, and their plans may go into tatters if Washington Sundar fails to have a good season with the bat.

A bold prediction? GT’s season will hinge on what they could get out of the in-form Kiwi allrounder Glenn Phillips. In the last few years, Phillips has been one of the most important players for New Zealand, and performs his best at Number 4 for the Black Caps, with an average of around 35 and a Strike Rate of just under 150.

The Titans will like something similar from him this season. He could be the difference between GT bundling out for 130 or crossing the 200 mark. However, in 7 T20I innings in India, Phillips has only scored 69 runs at under 10 at a Strike Rate of around 90. In the 50-over format, his numbers read better, going at an average of around 34 and a Strike Rate of 100. GT will want Phillips to turn the page and contribute to their season.

Predicted Playing XI: Shubman Gill (C), Jos Buttler (WK), B. Sai Sudharshan, Glenn Phillips, Washington Sundar, Shah Rukh Khan, Rahul Tewatia, Rashid Khan, Kagiso Rabada, Mohammad Siraj, Prasidh Krishna

Likely Impact Sub: R Sai Kishore, Mahipal Lomror, Gerald Coetzee

Kolkata Knight Riders
The defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have had an interesting few months.

In August, rumours began to swirl around that their IPL-winning captain Shreyas Iyer may get traded with Mumbai Indians’ Suryakumar Yadav. However, the Mumbai franchise convinced Surya to stay, and KKR could not negotiate a fee with Iyer to be retained.

The Knight Riders went into the IPL auction having retained six players, yet without a captain. By the end of those two days, KKR had built an interesting squad.

They have a like-for-like replacement in Quinton De Kock for Phil Salt and would want Anrich Nortje to play the role similar to Mitchell Starc from last season. In Sunil Narine and Andre Russell, they have two genuine matchwinners and would fancy Venkatesh Iyer to have similar performances as last year, having purchased his services for an astronomical value of over $4.3 million.

The biggest X-Factor of the Knight Riders side will be spinner Varun Chakrawarthy. He seems to have found a Midas touch, and KKR shall pat themselves on the back, having retained him for just under $2.2 million, considering he would have fetched a higher amount had he gone into the auction.

India international Rinku Singh would also like to have a strong season and solidify his place in the Indian international setup.

Coming to the captaincy debate, a few eyebrows were raised as KKR signed former Indian skipper Ajinkya Rahane towards the fag end of the auction. An astute cricketing brain, Rahane has had a resurgence in the T20 format with consistent performances for Chennai Super Kings in the last few seasons. KKR would like him to bring his experience and class and lead their side by example. One genuine concern for KKR would be their lack of depth and if their key players can’t maintain fitness, the season could be a long one for IPL’s defending champions.

Australia’s sole representative at KKR, Spencer Johnson, will hope to play a role in the 2025 IPL season.

Predicted Playing XI: Quinton De Kock (WK), Sunil Narine, Ajinkya Rahane (C), Venkatesh Iyer, Rinku Singh, Andre Russell, Ramandeep Singh, Harshit Rana, Vaibhav Arora, Anrich Nortje, Varun Chakravarthy

Likely Impact Sub: Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Rovman Powell, Mayank Markande

Lucknow Super Giants
Since their birth in 2021, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have been an interesting IPL story. In their first two seasons, they performed very well, qualifying for the knockout rounds, and in 2024, their turbulent season only got them a 7th spot.

After an ugly break-up with former captain K L Rahul, LSG went into the IPL auction having retained Nicholas Pooran, Mayank Yadav, Ravi Bishnoi, Ayush Badoni, and Mohsin Khan.

At the auction, they snapped Rishabh Pant for around $4.94 million making him the highest-ever signing in IPL’s 18-year history. They have assembled one of the most explosive T20 batting line-ups, however, there appears to be one weakness- LSG’s 4-5-6 number batters are all likely to be left-handers.

A bigger problem for them appears to be the fitness of their bowlers. There are questions over $4.52 million worth of Indian pacers in Mayank Yadav, Avesh Khan and Mohsin Khan. While Avesh is expected to be fit for the IPL opener, Mayank and Mohsin are expected to miss at least a few games. Notably, unsold pacers Shardul Thakur and Shivam Mavi are currently training with LSG.

Thus, ace spinner Bishnoi and India’s test pacer Akash Deep may need to shoulder maximum responsibility with the ball.

It is tough to predict how LSG’s season will turn out. If their key players turn up, they could be the dark horses, but the season could prove to be too steep in terms of qualifying for the playoffs for the Justin Langer-led side.

Predicted Playing XI: Rishabh Pant (C) (WK), Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram, Ayush Badoni, Nicholas Pooran, David Miller, Shahbaz Ahmed, Akash Deep, Ravi Bishnoi, M. Siddharth, Avesh Khan

Likely Impact Sub: Mayank Yadav (When fit), Abdul Samad, Shamar Joseph

Punjab Kings
Statistically, Punjab Kings (PK) are one of the worst sides across IPL’s 17 editions. After 2024 became their 10th consecutive edition of not finishing in the playoff positions, they did the most “Punjab Kings” thing- a total squad overhaul.

After retaining just two uncapped Indian players pre-auction in Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh, Punjab Kings went to the IPL auction with the highest purse, and splurged huge cash to get Shreyas Iyer (roughly $4.86 Million), Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal (both roughly $3.3 Million), and build a good squad on paper.

In fact, except for Arshdeep and uncapped spinner Harpreet Brar, they have assembled an entirely new squad, as compared to last year.
At this edition of IPL, PK brings the true Australian flavour. They have brought Ricky Ponting as coach, and have also acquired the services of all-rounder Marcus Stoinis (just over $2.01 million), Josh Inglis (over $475,000), Aaron Hardie (around $230,000), and Xavier Bartlett (around $150,000). The season also marks the homecoming of Glenn Maxwell for a fee of around $770,000 and his performance will hold key for PK’s season.

The last team that the Punjab IPL franchise reached an IPL final (in 2014), Glenn Maxwell was the Player of the Tournament, and George Bailey was the captain. The PK faithful hoped that this Aussie-powered machine could do one better and finally lift an IPL trophy.

Surrounded by stars, one glaring weakness of this side seems to be an inexperienced middle order that could end up becoming a longish tail. For numbers 5, 6, 7, and 8, the options PK has are- Nehal Wadhera, Azmatullah Omarzai, Shashank Singh, Marco Jansen, Priyansh Arya, and Suryansh Shedge.

Ponting could have his work cut out to get the most out of his middle and lower-middle order.

Whatever Shreyas has touched, has turned to gold in the last 18-odd months, and it would be interesting to see if he could win back-to-back IPL trophies with two different teams, though the path could be tricky.

Predicted Playing XI: Prabhsimran Singh (WK), Marcus Stoinis, Shreyas Iyer (C), Glenn Maxwell, Nehal Wadhera, Shashank Singh, Azmatullah Omarzai, Marco Jansen, Vijaykumar Vyashak, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal
Likely Impact Sub: Harpreet Brar, Priyansh Arya, Lockie Ferguson

Rajasthan Royals
Rajasthan Royals (RR) created history when under the leadership of late great Shane Warne, they won the inaugural edition of IPL. Since then, they have not done much of a note, apart from reaching the final in 2022.

Eyebrows were raised when Rajasthan Royals let go of their star batter and wicket-keeper Jos Buttler before the mega auction. They retained Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel, Shimron Hetmyer, and Sandeep Sharma to set up a talented core; however, they could have done a better job at the auction.

Despite trying for many players, they could not sign a decent Indian spinner (they had Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravichandran Ashwin last season) or a seamer all-rounder. Two important players for them will be Wanindu Hasranga and Jofra Archer, who are genuine matchwinners in the T20 format.

However, RR will hope that they can keep their fitness throughout the season. The Royals will want Parag to have a breakout season, and the player himself will be keen to put in strong numbers to consolidate his place in the Indian T20I side.

Sanju Samson would like to continue his India form and lead RR from the front, but Jaiswal remains the most important player for this team. A world-class talent, he is touted by many to have a very strong tournament and be one of the best performers of the 18th edition of the IPL.

Finally, it will be exciting to see if RR gives an opportunity to 13-year-old star signing Vaibhav Suryavanshi through the course of the season.

The Royals will be buoyed by the arrival of India’s World T20I winning coach Rahul Dravid at the helm and will hope to have a strong showing at the 2025 IPL.

Predicted Playing XI: Sanju Samson (C), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Nitish Rana, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Shimron Hetmyer, Riyan Parag, Wanindu Hasranga, Jofra Archer, Maheesh Theekshana, Tushar Deshpande, Sandeep Sharma

Royal Challengers Bangalore
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) is the Arsenal Football Club of IPL. One of the most dedicated fanbases, a famous home ground, talented players, and never not in the discussion to challenge for the trophy, but always coming short!

Time is running out for the generation’s best batsman across formats, Virat Kohli, and like every season, their supporters are hopeful that the “Trophy will come home”.

Having retained Kohli, Rajat Patidar, and left-arm pacer Yash Dayal, RCB went into the auction with a lot of work to do, and has assembled a side good enough to compete for a place in the playoffs.

They seem to have a good bowling attack, and Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood is set to be their lead international pacer. RCB have got good T20 players, but could require one of Kohli or new captain Patidar to play an anchor role, or their middle order faces the fear of a collapse.

Englishman Liam Livingstone will play a very important role in the middle order, likely at Number 4.

Statistically, that is the most preferred position, both for England and in the IPL, and he will also roll his arm and look to provide his team with crucial breakthroughs.

Kohli will once again be RCB’s most important player, and with Phil Salt set to partner him, he could play the preferred role of an aggregator or an anchor, with batters bringing their attacking game around him. Another vital cog in RCB’s wheel will be Krunal Pandya, who will like to bring his exploits from the Mumbai Indians days, and be an important player for his franchise.

At over $2 million, wicketkeeper batsman Jitesh Sharma will have a lot of eyeballs scrutinising his performances, and will have to do the enviable duties of a finisher.

RCB has also acquired the services of Englishman Jacob Bethell for this season after fighting off competition from Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings. Bethell has been considered as one of the most sought-after players of this year’s tournament and it would be interesting to see if RCB gives him game time at any point throughout the course of this season.

Predicted Playing XI: Virat Kohli, Phil Salt, Rajat Patidar (C), Liam Livingstone, Krunal Pandya, Jitesh Sharma (WK), Tim David, Swapnil Singh, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, Josh Hazlewood, Yash Dayal

Likely Impact Sub: Suyash Sharma, Rasikh Dar, Jacob Bethell

Rating out of 10: 8

Squad: Rajat Patidar (c), Virat Kohli, Yash Dayal, Josh Hazlewood, Phil Salt, Jitesh Sharma, Liam Livingstone, Rasikh Dar, Suyash Sharma, Krunal Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Swapnil Singh, Tim David, Romario Shepherd, Nuwan Thushara, Manoj Bhandage, Jacob Bethell, Devdutt Padikkal, Swastik Chhikara, Lungi Ngidi, Abhinandan Singh, Mohit Rathee

Sunrisers Hyderabad
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) come into this season with a lot of attention. Led by IPL 2025’s only non-Indian captain Pat Cummins, they have assembled one of the most explosive batting orders of T20 cricket.

They went into the auction, having retained captain Cummins, South African Heinrich Klaasen (around $4.2 million), Australian ace Travis Head and India’s Abhishek Sharma (both approximately $2.56 million each). By the end of Mega Auction, SRH got good players all across positions.

With Ishan Kishan, they have bolstered their attacking power, and are set to dominate IPL’s bowling attacks.
In Mohammad Shami, SRH has found a good deputy to Cummins to share the new ball, and their death over concerns have been answered by incoming Harshal Patel.

While the team has serious matchwinners, there seem to be two pinch points to this side. As Rahul Chahar is their sole experienced spinner, if he can’t perform, SRH will be forced to include Adam Zampa in their playing XI, thus disrupting the balance of their playing XI.

While they have a lethal top 5, and Abhinav Manohar could slot in at number 6, they would have breathed easier with a better option at number 7, than Wiann Mulder or Kamindu Mendis. Mulder is likely to get the nod, but if one of them flunks, Cummins or Patel may be required to bat one spot higher than what they may be comfortable with.

It will also be interesting to see how Nitish Kumar Reddy manages his fitness throughout the course of this IPL season.

However, SRH will hope that their top-heavy batting line-up does not bring the spotlight on number 6 and number 7 batters, and are considered as one of the favorites to go one better than last year and win the IPL 2025 trophy.

Predicted Playing XI: Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan (WK), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Heinrich Klassen, Abhinav Manohar, Wiann Mulder, Pat Cummins, Harshal Patel, Mohammad Shami, Rahul Chahar
Likely Impact Sub: Jaydev Unadkat, Simarjeet Singh, Sachin Baby

Rating out of 10: 8.5

Mumbai Indians
The most successful IPL team and the worst team across the last three editions, Mumbai Indians (MI) would like to turn the tables and have a strong tournament this time.

Mumbai Indians completely lost the narrative in 2024, when Hardik Pandya replaced Rohit Sharma as the captain. The fracture in the team was evident, the side was plagued by injuries and it looked certain that MI would not be able to keep hold of their core.

However, they somehow managed to retain Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Verma before heading to the auction, where they got good enough players to get most of their bases covered, including the signing of dangerous Will Jacks.

They have also managed to sort their spin-bowler headache out, with New Zealand all-rounder Mitchell Santner and Afghan spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman joining the ranks.

Trent Boult, a part of MI’s fancied 2020 IPL side has reunited with Jasprit Bumrah, and in Deepak Chahar, Mumbai Indians have got another high-quality Indian pacer.

Leading to IPL 2025, Mumbai Indians are a scary-looking side. Not only do they have what looks like the best bowling attack in the tournament, they have also built an explosive batting order, but MI will hope that their players can maintain their fitness.

Hardik Pandya underwent a baptism of fire as the hatchet seems to have been buried with MI’s senior players, and following MI’s core playing a crucial role in India’s World T20 and ICC Champions Trophy triumph, the weight seems to have been firmly put behind Hardik Pandya.

A lot will also be expected of youngster Naman Dhir, who was signed by the team in the Mega Auction for around $960,000. MI would like him to make the best of his six-hitting capabilities and shoulder the responsibility of a dedicated finisher, besides bowling handy overs if required. The fans would also like to see Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Robin Minz have a role to play this season.

Predicted Playing XI: Rohit Sharma, Ryan Rickleton (WK), Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Will Jacks, Hardik Pandya (C), Naman Dhir, Mitchell Santner, Deepak Chahar, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah

Likely Impact Sub: Robin Minz, Karn Sharma, Raj Bawa

Rating out of 10: 9
