Geelong supporters should be pleased with the result, going in without Miers and Stewart and then to lose Stanley early, against a quality team like Collingwood.

Footy Fix: The Cats buried the Pies with four minutes of magic. Here's how Collingwood nearly beat them anyway

The only problem is no one watches it. Its a dying sport in Australia. I’d hate to see how the audience numbers would be without all the Kiwi migrants.

The Roar's AFL expert tips and predictions, Round 7: Who will rise the highest for Anzac Round?

I actually think this is a danger game for the Cats and am less confident than last week. Carlton have come off of two easy wins and Geelong a short break after a hard fought win. Missing their best small forward after losing Jack Henry and Bruhn still out wont help. On the Bright side Ollie Wiltshire gets a chance and it will be good to see if he can step up to AFL level while Jye Clark gets another chance. He has not lived up to the hype when he was recruited at pick 8 in ’22. He did have a bad year with injury which held him back but another Joel Selwood he is not. Geelong is a little vulnerable right now and this will be the blues chance to capitalise. It will depend a lot on some of those younger players stepping up to the occasion. I am predicting Wiltshire will play a very good game. I wont be surprised if the Cats drop this one.

They have publicly stated ad nauseum they would prefer to play all their home games at Kardinia Park. It is obvious when most live near Geelong there is always extra travel time etc. I believe they need at least around 70,000 people at the MCG which is around break even compared to filling Kardinia park. Even then they have still lost home ground advantage.

Footy Fix: The Hawks just had their worst-kicking game in 12 months - and somehow still only lost by seven

It was very poor judgement by Nash. He has got four weeks which is probably at the low end but it’s done and let’s move on. Sadly it took conversation away from the game which was another Geelong Hawthorn classic. There were many mistakes but both sides have some younger players and the pressure starts before these two teams even hit the field the expectation and rivalry is so great and that will produce poor decision and poor execution at times. I would argue no two teams have produced so many competitive games over such a long period of time. Regardless of result, neither Cat supporters and I suspect Hawks supporters walk away from these games thinking the better team won. We know the next time the result is just as likely to go the other way. Ladder position means little between these two great rivals.

Still romancing Hawthorn, Tim. Normally you give a good analysis but this was biased and woeful. How a team can be unlucky to lose when they were in front for a total of 3 minutes in the entire game is totally beyond me. You also failed to take account of any of the points made by Windrince in your article. In short Hawthorn had every advantage and still lost.

Why write off Freo yet? Everyone is giving GCS love but they have played the five bottom teams out of their six games. Freo could be 5th if it wasn’t for percentage. IMO look after 8 rounds and you’ve got at least 6 of the final 8.

Six Points: Meet footy's No.1 coach (again), and how to fix the farcical 15m kick crackdown

How many times can they change a coach. Carltons problems are deeper than the coach and the current team that is still far from a premiership team. Looking at Carltons history and their poor ladder position over the majority of the last 20 years they should have had a team of champions from the draft by now. They need to be looking at the football administration dept and possibly the assistant coaches to give Voss more help. Imo they need to do at least a partial rebuild and kiss the finals goodbye for two or three years (and that’s being optimistic) if they are going to achieved any sort of sustained success. The alternative is to change the game plan and get two or three years in the eight before sinking back again.

Michael Voss is past his expiry date. It’s time that Carlton listened to their fans

He should’ve gone to Freo. He might have provided the spark they needed at the time and would’ve had some support from the midfield talent there. The trouble with WCE wasn’t that the spark was missing, the pilot light was out.

The Roar's AFL expert tips and predictions, Round 6: Who'll get the chocolates this Easter... and who will rise on Good Friday?

Not a fan of gather round but it would be interesting to play it elsewhere. I would suggest every three years move it between the other states but not in Victoria. Leave it as a non Victorian fixture. Also it gives Victorians a whole week off from listening to “Victorian bias” posts.

Absolute football purity: The reason why Gather Round is a such smash hit with true AFL fans

It’s always nice to win interstate especially against an inform team. I liked the way the Cats stayed in the fight and for most of the night despite being behind never really looked beaten. Some poor unforced kicking errors especially earlier in the game that led to turnovers from Dempsey and a couple of others put the Cats behind the eight ball but missing Henry, Stewart and Kolo, did make it harder for the younger defenders facing such a talented Adelaide forward spearhead combination. I disagree with Scott on Dekoning and think he should stay as a key back. There were many good performances on both sides but Atkins contribution was telling and Danger showed he is still a dangerous players, even at 35.

Footy Fix: The Crows are freewheeling, frenetic and insanely fun - and that makes them vulnerable

It was really an unimpressive win by Geelong. Some poor kicking especially in the first quarter gave Melbourne the opportunity to stay in the game. Melbourne seems a shadow of its former self As good as Gawn is, it looks like age is catching up with him. Geelong were mediocre at times out of the centre but are very good at gaining second use of the ball. Holmes was well held at times as was Cameron. On the upside, Geelong still had 8 goal kickers and despite losing Henry and with Blicavs, Guthrie (LTI), Kolodjashnij and Bruhn out and so many inexperienced young players being blooded we still managed to win, with O’Sullivan (5 games), Clohesy (6 games), Humphries (15 games) Unbelievable this guy was picked up from WAFL seconds and Mannagh (13 games). Couple this with Scott’s penchant for experimenting early in the season and I am still confident Geelong will be there at the pointy end of the season.

Footy Fix: Goodwin's tactical disasterclass gives the Cats exactly what they've always wanted

Rowell wont enjoy playing in the seconds under Bevo.

Footy Fix: Forget the recruits - it's the old names still driving the Pies' premiership push

Nice peace Tim and good analysis. I wont be crying in my beer yet. We had quite a few inexperienced players in and nobody expects SDK to be Max Gawn II. The Cats play Marvel badly maybe due to lack of games there and inexperience of the conditions. Glad Birdman’s joy has returned. He’s been rather quiet for how many years is it? As head of the brown and white cellar dweller club.

Footy Fix: The five massive wins - and three Cats blunders - that let Saints cling to famous victory... just

No… JUH doesn’t fit the player profile at Geelong and too many issues. My Tarot card reader tells me definitely Rowell.

Footy Fix: Forget the recruits - it's the old names still driving the Pies' premiership push

No room at the Cats for JUH with Rowell and Clarrie coming next year. Expect an advertising deal for the two from Cotton on and Morris finance to be announced shortly from Rowell’s and Clarries’ newly “acquired” farms.

Footy Fix: Forget the recruits - it's the old names still driving the Pies' premiership push

Please remind us of the proof you’ve found for those “shady deals”. Or is it just unfounded speculation resulting in an accusation based on nothing other than your baseless opinion? I find your non de plume quite ironic.

AFL News: Concerns over conflict of interest in Cats audit, Tiger to cash in on flash debut, new AFLPA President

I dont know who should be more insulted, a Freo or Cats fan. Anyone that thinks that game defines Freos’ season is in for a shock. Admittedly a few of Freos’ good players put in a shocker but that third quarter showed if you give Freo an inch they will quickly punish you. Many teams would’ve been on the ropes after the first half but Freos comeback was swift and they put themselves in a position to win the game in the 3rd. Back at home they will be a completely different team. I wont be removing them from my top 8 just yet.
Incidently, not in order: Geelong, Hawthorn, Freo, Giants, Brisbane (lower half), Melbourne (lower half), Carlton (lower half), Sydney(lower half) Doggies may displace one if they can get past their injuries. Based on last year I think Bevo needs a break from coaching, based more on who he left out last season.

Footy Fix: The Pies might be back ... but Port were so ghastly it's hard to tell

If white men cant jump attracts no controversy how does black men cant swim? Both statements are false, but racist?
Soon, an Englishman, Scotsman and Irishman joke will be reduced to, a coloniser, a gentleman of the kilt, and an island inhabitant of Celtic origin.

AFL great and veteran broadcaster in hot water for 'black men can't swim' on-air gaffe

we can only hope. Unlike some, I don’t think there is a Victorian bias. I think the AFL long ago forgot the fans in an all out bid too chase the dollar. Anything else is secondary, otherwise North and Saints would be just a memory. The TV dollar reigns supreme.

Footy Fix: The Pies might be back ... but Port were so ghastly it's hard to tell

Well done Tiges, although I thought Carlton made a lot of basic errors many of which have been commented on already. Carlton also has a few injuries so is that part the reason or just lack of depth? The backs were certainly out positioned and out pressured by the tiger forwards with many relatively unforced errors on Carlton’s back line in spite of having the best of the overall stats. Richmond did look like they played with more heart despite Carltons obvious fade in the last quarter. Was it partially due to Carltons inability to run out the last quarter and was that caused by lack of players, fitness, or just a lack of talent? A worrying trend must also be Voss’s seemingly inability to get a uniform consistency in games across a season. One week they play like champions the next like wooden spooners.

Footy Fix: Yze's masterpiece, Blues blunders and a truckload of heart - how Tigers pulled off best win since the flags

Succession fails more often than not. Roos succession was successful only because he wanted limited tenure. Nearly every other coach was basically given a fait accompli. My guess is Hinkley will go back to his old team Geelong and be prepared to wait until Scotty retires, bringing a few Victorian players with him to top up the Cats. Not as far fetched as some may think. I’ve always thought that measuring success only by premierships is a furphy and I rate Hinkley more highly than many roarers if some of the past comments are any indicator. Certainly more highly than the Port fans.

Why coaching succession plan could prove to be risky for Port Adelaide

The mental anguish of these footballers like Spud before him and many others is a mirror of our community and the sad mental state of many men who battle for years before the end. The number of suicides by men in Australia every day shows we have a long way to go addressing men’s mental Health. This hits our football club hard as the Selwoods occupy such a unique, almost revered place within the Geelong football club, from Geelong’s greatest Captain to the involvement of the whole family. RIP Troy.

'Built-in best mate': Selwoods' emotional farewell to brother Troy

I’ll just put that comment in my Geelong conspiracy drawer, alongside Geelong will just be a speed bump for teams in the 24 finals and of course that old perennial favourite, Geelong wont make the eight this season. BTW, I before E except after C. Your welcome.
