This is spot on.
Footy Fix: The Pies are fast, furious, fearless and fantastically coached - everything Fremantle aren't
I see what you did there, Chanon.
And obviously I’m obliged to point out that the Hawks are the fourth member of the quartet. Which other team could it possibly be? 😂
Footy Fix: The Pies are fast, furious, fearless and fantastically coached - everything Fremantle aren't
The Pies are so well coached. They had no right to win that game last night. Five day break, long interstate trip, resting key players, Freo fired up and desperate to win.
But their system, discipline and connection between the players were as good as any team I’ve seen. That’s all down to superior coaching.
Footy Fix: The Pies are fast, furious, fearless and fantastically coached - everything Fremantle aren't
Brilliant player.

Meanwhile Meek is now one of the best three ruckmen in the AFL. Thanks Freo!
Footy Fix: The Pies are fast, furious, fearless and fantastically coached - everything Fremantle aren't
I was at the Boston Bruins centenary game last year and it was a massive occasion. In fact the Bruins’ whole season was built around a series of events celebrating their history as one of the oldest teams in the NHL.
A shame the Hawks’ centenary was given such a low profile. Our game is one of the oldest organised sports in the world, yet we seem to undervalue its remarkable history.
The AFL dropped the ball with Hawthorn's centenary celebrations - the Hawks deserved far better
Just when I think I’ve overcome my self-destructive urge to keep tipping Freo, the Pies decide to rest a bunch of key players. And so yet again, I’m tipping Freo. Don’t let me down this time, purple people.
Tough round for tipping though. Every game could go either way. Even Brisbane and Hawthorn aren’t the certainties that the betting odds might suggest.
AFL Tipping: The Roar's expert tips and predictions, Round 9 - It's Showdown time in the toughest tipster week of the year
Yeah on that measure the Hawks are 17-6. Brisbane must be the only team above those two – roughly 20-3 I think.
Dogs look very good at the moment.
AFL Power Rankings Round 8: It's been a great run for the Bulldogs ... but do they have enough bite to be a flag contender?
It’s starting to look like there are three leading flag contenders – Brisbane, Collingwood, Geelong. They’re the teams to beat. I think one of these three will probably win the flag.
Then there’s a small gap to Hawthorn and the Bulldogs. Both are very strong teams that will play finals this year and are genuine premiership dark horses. But the Hawks don’t yet look as impressive as last year and the Dogs have only turned the corner in the past few weeks.
Then another gap back to Adelaide, Gold Coast and GWS. All very good teams but all with question marks over their heads, for different reasons in each case. These teams could play finals or implode and drop well down the ladder. Still too early to say.
And finally there’s the chasing pack of Freo, Port, Sydney and Carlton. The last three made finals last year and Freo was unlucky to miss, so all four have what it takes to make the top eight. But all have lost games they should’ve won, and are at risk of falling too far behind unless they can find some consistency, quickly.
AFL Power Rankings Round 8: It's been a great run for the Bulldogs ... but do they have enough bite to be a flag contender?
Leaving aside any confected drama about the Bogan King, the Dogs vs Cats game promises to be a cracking game of footy. Both genuine flag contenders playing exciting footy. Danger vs Bont alone would be worth the price of admission.
The inescapable irony Bailey Smith missed with 'misplaced snobbery' against the Bulldogs
“…and James Sicily got in a fight.”
Brilliant! 😂
The other interesting thing about this round is that what was a tight ladder is starting to spread out. The top seven are breaking away from the pelaton. GWS are a game back and are looking vulnerable. Everyone else is now chasing eighth spot.
Six Points: Calling out the worst interview question ever, and the new crackdown you (probably) missed
With Freo and Port losing badly this round, Carlton looks the most likely challenger to the teams currently in the top eight. But you’ll need to keep winning. There’s a bit of a gap starting to open up between the top 7/8 teams and the rest.
Footy Fix: The Cats buried the Pies with four minutes of magic. Here's how Collingwood nearly beat them anyway
My bad. A quick google confirms Harvey also has eight, along with Danger, Roo, Buddy and Gaz jr.
If Danger can get one this year, he’ll be top of the pile. Hope he can do it.
Footy Fix: The Cats buried the Pies with four minutes of magic. Here's how Collingwood nearly beat them anyway
As you said earlier, we’re privileged to watch him. Even though Hawks fans are supposed to hate Geelong, I absolutely love watching Danger play.
Reminds me so much of Mark Rucciuto, who was criminally under-rated in his time, at least outside SA.
One of the many things they have in common is eight All-Australian guernseys. It would be fitting if Danger got another one this year, to put him alongside Robert Harvey as the only players with nine.
Footy Fix: The Cats buried the Pies with four minutes of magic. Here's how Collingwood nearly beat them anyway
Yep. Dangerfield seems to be playing every game like it’s his last. Total commitment, gut-busting effort and disregard for his own safety. And there were plenty of others, on both sides, playing the same way last night.
Footy Fix: The Cats buried the Pies with four minutes of magic. Here's how Collingwood nearly beat them anyway
Yep. Not quite the same scenario as Hardwick – and obviously hasn’t won a flag yet – but a similar sudden rise from easybeats to serious contenders in a single season.
Footy Fix: Freo, once again, are broken - and this time, it might just be coach-killing
Sam Mitchell seems to have pulled it off. This time last year the Hawks were 1-6 and looking squarely at another bottom four finish, reflecting their bottom four list. Since then they’ve gone 19-6 and look very likely to play finals again this year.
Coaches do make a difference – more so than ever in the modern game, which is a continuously evolving game of rock-paper-scissors. Mitchell’s system is one step ahead of most other teams and his players are totally committed to it.
The same can’t be said of Longmuir. He has a much better list than Mitchell, but is producing poorer, less consistent results. If Freo wants to be the type of hard-headed club that wins premierships, I think they need to make a hard decision about their coach.
Footy Fix: Freo, once again, are broken - and this time, it might just be coach-killing
Same as my tips. I share your concern about Freo’s reliability on the road but have picked them anyway.
Hawks won’t beat Richmond by as much as people think. Their form this year has been solid but well short of how they were playing through the second half of last season.
Looks like we could be in for some cracking games this weekend.
The Roar's AFL expert tips and predictions, Round 8: Rivalries galore on Election Weekend - with the biggest QClash ever
Yes. His targeting of Sheezel in particular was gratuitous, personal and unfair.
Nothing wrong with commentators criticising the performance of players, but this was bullying, not commentary. Nick Reiwoldt seemed (rightly) shocked and embarrassed by it.
AFL News: Roos boycott 'vindictive, bullying' Cornes, Lyon blows up over Saint's VFL ban flaw
Yes, Hawks too high at 3. They’re playing well enough and accumulating premiership points, which is all they need to do at this stage of the season. But they’re still well short of the standard they set through the second half of 2024.
AFL Power Rankings: Blues rise FOUR spots... but are they in the top eight?
The Hawks’ record in games without Day is staggeringly poor. Something like 2-12 over the past few years. They’re not a team that relies heavily on star players, but Day might be the exception. They struggle to beat good sides without him.
Footy Fix: The Hawks just had their worst-kicking game in 12 months - and somehow still only lost by seven
Hawks have played all of last season’s top four in their first six games. A tough draw to start 2025.
At the beginning of the year I thought they’d finish somewhere around the middle of the top 8 this season. Everything I’ve seen since – including today’s game – suggests to me that’s still the right call. Probably one of the best six sides, but not the flag favourites the media has built them up to be.
Footy Fix: The Hawks just had their worst-kicking game in 12 months - and somehow still only lost by seven
Best comment ever on the Roar.
Except for one I saw yesterday.
Six Points: Meet footy's No.1 coach (again), and how to fix the farcical 15m kick crackdown
I agree. Tim’s suggestion might be superficially appealing but would certainly have huge unintended consequences, like the one you describe. It’d very quickly become too risky for teams to attempt to switch play to find gaps in defensive zones, The game would revert to long bombs down the line and stoppage after stoppage.
Six Points: Meet footy's No.1 coach (again), and how to fix the farcical 15m kick crackdown
Yes he’ll be hearing from my lawyer.
