Magical piece of scheduling doesn't hide the fact it's insane to start women's Origin before NRLW
Definitely a mystery, Kirsty! I couldn’t write about any player’s form because it’s been a while since I have seen anyone play. 😂

I really do agree. I think I wrote about this last year:
Why it’s one step forward, but another one back in women’s Origin evolution

Jimmmy it’s really hard and I don’t have a solution either. Just spitballing here, would it work to have the series at the end of the season? I’m not sure whether interest would be as high, but it’s an option?

Big Gordon, I completely agree with where you are coming from and I perhaps didn’t explain myself well.
The NRL has signalled it wants the men’s and women’s State of Origin to be largely aligned. If that’s the case, I like the idea of playing it before Magic Round and publicising it well (as opposed to last year when it was announced late and people couldn’t get there because they had booked travel plans).
I think the timing is appalling and does not set the women up for success. But in the world we are living in right now, at least they will be playing in front of a big crowd.

Rellum, my understanding is that last year the BMD Premiership was used by Norris as a way to help her select her squad.
Now the Maroons have also moved towards the 6 week training camp approach taken by NSW and use the BMD Premiership as essentially reserve grade for the NRLW (which I quite like).
I think that’s the state of play but if you know any more info am all ears!

I thought the Western Red Eyes had some merit. 😂 😂 😂
NRL expansion mess in Perth is too much to Bear
I love this so much!!! So so happy to hear it and thank you for your kind words.
I think Perth is a no brainer and really hope that it happens!

I appreciate you taking the time to comment, KiwiBear.
On your third paragraph, I’m really not sure. I understood that the initial issue was that the consortium didn’t include the licence fee in their bid, but then indicated they were willing to include it? I genuinely have no idea why that didn’t go ahead.
In terms of PVL being an expansionist – I think he is interested in more teams, more broadcast slots, more money. That may not be for the purposes of growing the game but I definitely take your point.

I don’t think I’m getting any Christmas cards this year, Jack Ghost! 😂
NRL expansion mess in Perth is too much to Bear
I do it on the regular, Criag!! It’s so much fun isn’t it.
My nutty idea was to give the Bears an NRLW team… but it looks like the NRL is more interested in each NRL team having a men’s team and a women’s team.

I would also add, that the NRL can’t have its cake and eat it too; i.e. impose the Bears and then expect the WA Gvt to stump up the cash for it.

Nat, thank you! 😊
I think what really bothered me last week in particular was the leaking to the media that the talks about Perth were off. It was really stupid timing. If it’s the case that the bid was on life support, at least wait until the week after the game to make that announcement. It no doubt had an impact on crowds and the NRL was in damage control – you just had to tune in to the coverage to see it.
Your final paragraph is a good one and it again comes down to risk. In terms of the offer, there was a serious offer from the private consortium last year which at one point did agree to the licence fee – it was rejected. Again, it seems like the current offer isn’t enough again.
My understanding is that the NRL asked for the WA government to chip in $120 million ($12 million a year over 10 years) to ensure a team was established in Perth. The WA Gvt apparently were willing to make this contribution. What more are the NRL looking for? And if that’s not enough, we should cut ties with Perth and be looking elsewhere rather than this on again off again situation we find ourselves in.
I totally understand the NRL not wanting to be funding a defunct club because of a change in government. I would argue that we run exactly the same risk with PNG.

The NRL is a ‘for purpose’ organisation. I would argue that doing things for the ‘warm and fuzzys’ is part of the NRLs role.

Busty, which option is your favourite out of the ones you have suggested? 😁

Dwayne, I like NRLBoomRookies and for Parra sickos, the Cumberland Throw.
NRL should focus on blatant conflicts of interest rife in the game instead of trying to control TV agendas
And in the end this really only hurts rugby itself because there is no critical challenge of what is going wrong.

Really appreciate the kind words, Kirsty and so glad you are enjoying the NRLW coverage. Very happy that your daughter has found a place in our game!!

Yup…
I remember the year I found out my services were no longer required. It was less than optimal how it happened.

I’m exactly the same, BigGordon. I basically read the Roar and listen to podcasts now. When I used to be on Twitter, my life improved dramatically when I stopped following FoxNRL.

Paul, I caught up a with a mate last week and he said ‘everything issue in rugby league can be boiled down to the tension between 9 and Fox’. I could not disagree with him!
